RootsTech 2018 introduces Light Keepers – a family history experience for women. It’s an all-new educational and inspirational family history experience designed for Latter-day Saint women.
RootsTech is the largest genealogy conference in the world. Held in Salt Lake City, Utah, this four day event starts on February 28, 2018 through March 3rd. This year marks some exciting changes and additions to the nearly 10 year old conference and one of those additions is the Light Keepers event.
RootsTech can be a bit overwhelming to the new genealogist or family historian, but the Light Keepers event was designed for specifically those new persons. Especially, women.
The idea of a special event was first imagined in the beginning months of 2017. Rhonna Farrer, Allison Kimball, and others were brainstorming about what they wished had been available when they first started on their family history journey. Allison says, “We were looking for something lovely that showed family history in a way that was more than just names, dates, and guilt. For so many of us, genealogy and family history are trigger words that cause a retreat. As we began to teach at various events, we came to learn over and over again there was a lack of understanding about family history… primarily because of the way the message was conveyed in the past. People have a yearning to connect to their families in simple ways.”
RootsTech agreed and the Light Keepers special event was born!
Light Keepers Attendees: What’s in Store?
Join LDS women of all ages and from all over the world on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the Salt Lake Convention Center. This event combines inspiration and education with an emphasis on the family history experience in a hands-on experience. You’ll be introduced to the basics of family history by passionate and energetic experts that will open your eyes to the myriad of ways women can participate in family history.
I think the key phrase here is your eyes will be opened to the many ways women are already engaged in family history and unique ways they can continue to participate. (See our recent article entitled: The Unidentified Family Historian: Is it You?)
Your Light Keeper experience will include an all-day workshop, a free workbook filled with prompts to help you along your family history journey, a catered lunch, a fantastic keynote session, prizes and giveaways, access to the expansive RootsTech Expo Hall, admission to the evening event, and an after party to mingle with professionals and friends. The value of the one day workshop is an amazing bargain. Click here to learn how to register. I look forward to seeing you there!
